Translators howl when they meet entire dialogs filled with "he said - she said - he said". In German this is an absolute no-no and the poor translator has to come up with a different verb every time - something highfalutin when there is no other option left.Andreas Möhnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16445003484633925867noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2418403105903836058.post-66610044886783552202015-04-30T07:29:42.947-06:002015-04-30T07:29:42.947-06:00Very helpful! thxVery helpful! thxAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2418403105903836058.post-48695222057623272015-04-23T19:09:52.865-06:002015-04-23T19:09:52.865-06:00This is some great advice. This is some great advice.A. What I hate the most is that my brain registers it as a time change vs. a movement change. If I have to go back and reread a sentence, paragraph, or (worse) an entire scene, the flow of the plot and the magic I felt when reading the story is ruined.

Again, great article that points to something few new writers consider. "Crowley" wasn't as common back when Good Omens was written; but nowadays, if you name your demon that, you'll just look unimaginative. They're not always bad, true; that's why the actual advice was to *hesitate* before picking a meaningful name. Consider the benefits and detriments first.Christopher Baxterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14255333873728521772noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2418403105903836058.post-17050670329032424692015-03-11T14:33:26.634-06:002015-03-11T14:33:26.634-06:00Meaningful names are only a problem if there's...Meaningful names are only a problem if there's a spoiler involved. So Darth Vader was a bit of a risk, but everyone knows from scene one that Mufasa is a king so there's nothing wrong with naming him that. And Good Omens is a satire. Bad jokes are part of the territory. T. A. It is not always in ignorance of the use of the word but something in a colloquial use. I don't always like it when I see what they are doing to the language but I do understand what it is that they are doing. The absence of a period in my work will only be that I've made an error, not that I'm in the trend that leaves them out. Thanks for the great post. Recently I've started to do some "free writing" every time before starting with the real text I'm working on. I give myself five minutes to write whatever pops into my mind, and I really mean whatever, nobody is going to read these "five minute texts" anyway. This method seems to be useful for me, I feel like it lowers the bar and makes easier to start writing the actual text.Learning Overloadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17110102487304729462noreply@blogger.com
